Jeeps have long been used on trails ever since they first came into production. Whenever you see a Jeep going down the street, “off-road” is often the first word that comes to mind. With Jeeps comes off-roading, and with off-roading comes overlanding—and this is the part that includes the aspect in which you would need to sleep in your Jeep.
The Jeep Renegade is a good off-roading vehicle—no doubt—especially the Trailhawk model, which can even approach the Jeep Wrangler’s territory. When overlanding, you will be spending your time in the wild. When you are away from home in your Jeep, it’s important to know if you can also sleep comfortably in it.
Can you sleep in a Jeep Renegade? The short answer to this question is “no.” The rear seats are inadequate, and the cargo space is limited. Even if you try and manage to lie down flat in the front seat, it will not be comfortable at all.
However, there are ways in which you can utilize your Jeep Renegade to sleep comfortably. Luckily, the Jeep community has several workarounds for this space issue—this means you don’t have to move to a bigger SUV. You can remain in your sub-compact Jeep Renegade—the smallest Jeep—and still sleep comfortably.
We can divide the number of methods into categories:
- Sleeping in a Jeep Renegade on a budget
- Getting the job done sleeping in a Jeep Renegade
- Full-comfort sleeping in a Jeep Renegade
- Pro-level sleeping in a Jeep Renegade
Sleeping in a Jeep Renegade on a budget
If you don’t want to spend the extra cash and still want to sleep in a Jeep Renegade, you can improvise. You can lower the front passenger seat all the way down, and it will become flat straight. This is a new feature that exists only in the latest Jeep Renegades.
You can then put some of your belongings down to make a pile in the foot area to make that empty space filled up to be parallel with your seat. After this has been done, put a small cloth in-between the crevice area of the seat, again, to help make a completely flat sleeping area instead of waves of uneven seat going up and down.
Getting the job done sleeping in a Jeep Renegade
To save some money, you can purchase an inflatable column that fits between the front and rear seats of your vehicle. There are also inflatable mattresses that will give you extra space to lie down and have a remotely flat sleeping surface for the night and are specifically designed for back seats. There are many kinds of air mattresses available for purchase, one of them being this particular product.
Full-comfort sleeping in a Jeep Renegade
For extra comfort, you would need to install a few things on your Jeep. First, you will need a rooftop tent like this. To get everything ready, you would need to put on ladders that you can climb up, as it won’t be easy to climb up on the roof without the attached ladders. You would also need roof rails and cross bars for extra support.
Additionally, you can also experience full comfort when sleeping in your Jeep by having all of the luggage stored on the roof and extending the rear by adding a plywood extension attached to a rail extended outwards, as well as having a tent that can extend to cover that area—similar to the Patio Deck product. (This method is further explained in the pro-level section.)
In the case of bad weather when you would not be able to sleep on the top like the first example in this section, you can refer to the pro-level setup, similar to the second option mentioned above.
Pro-level sleeping in a Jeep Renegade
This is where some modifications and head-scratching will occur. If you want to sleep inside and have all of your luggage on the roof, there is a way. First, you would have to add a plywood floor that can extend out, just like how a Patio Deck functions on a travel trailer.
You can then cover that area with a tent to avoid having to encounter any bugs. This extended tailgate area will give you plenty of space to which you can add comfortable mattresses and pillows.
If, however, you are not able to sleep in an open area due to weather conditions, you can try the “Gets the Job Done” method, which is explained above.
Can You Sleep in the Back of a Jeep Renegade?
If you want to sleep on the rear seats, it is possible; however, if you want to sleep all the way in the back, it won’t be possible as the cargo area is only 27.2 cubic feet, which is inadequate. You can only make it happen if you add plywood extensions on the floor, which would need to be attached to the floor and extend outwards. The detailed procedure for this is mentioned above.
What is the Best Way to Sleep in a Jeep Renegade?
The best way to have both comfort and utility at the lowest possible price is to go for the air mattress that goes between the front and rear seats, commonly just referred to as a “backseat air mattress.”
If you and your travelling companion both tend to sleep in a fetal position, it’s likely that you may even be able to have two people fit in the backseat for sleeping purposes. With this overall method, you would not have to worry about bad weather nor pesky bugs. On top of that, you would also save money since you wouldn’t need a rooftop tent or any other modifications—just fill the mattress with air and deflate it when you are done.
To make things even easier, these air mattresses also generally come with air pumps included that attach to the 12-volt DC ports in most vehicles.
Sleeping in a Jeep Renegade
There are several ways that you improvise when wanting to sleep in a Jeep Renegade since the space is not adequate enough to where you can just throw some mattresses and pillows together and it’s done. You will have to make some modifications or buy extra supplies to make it feasible to sleep comfortably in your vehicle.
The first way to do this is to have an inflatable mattress between the front and back seats. You can move the front seats as far forward as possible to give you extra room in the middle for the mattress. Another method is to get a rooftop tent. The third method is to extend the tailgate area by attaching a plywood floor that is moveable on rails.
Modifications are necessary for some of the methods mentioned here, so feel free to just go for the option you are most comfortable with.
