Jeep Renegade is one of the most capable offroaders in the small SUV class. All thanks to the advance (TCS) Traction Control System coupled with the (BLD) Brake Limited Differential.
So in general, Can Jeep Renegade Go Off Road? The simple answer to this question is Yes, you can go off road on your Jeep Renegade, but up to what extent is going to be decided by a couple of different factors.
It’s a Renegade of all the things. It won’t be as good as a Wrangler or a Cherokee if you may ask. However, if you are insisting on having a Renegade for offroading then your best bet would be the Trailhawk edition.
There are several problems that you need to address if you are looking for an entry-level offroader such as the Renegade. Here are some things that you should consider when you are wanting to have a Renegade.
This is the biggest problem for the Renegade. It comes with very low ground clearance, 6.7 inches is what you get on the lower 2WD models which goes up to 8 inches for the 4WD models.
The Trailhawk however has a ground clearance of 8.7 inches which is very good for its own class. But this 8.7 won’t be enough to make a good offroader. So you would have to put on a lift kit along with bigger tires. These two are the must-have mods that you can’t overlook.
If you go with the lower trim levels of the Renegade and you modify them to have more ground clearance, you still won’t be able to have a good offroader because you can’t deny the fact that there is no lower gear ratio.
The lower gear ratio is the thing that makes it crawl with more power in simple words. And the Renegade does not have that which is why it’s not the best offroader in the market. The Cherokee does have that.
The Trailhawk on the other hand does not have the lower gear ratio as well, known as the low range transfer case, but Its integrated tech and power is something worth mentioning.
Even if it does not have a low-range transfer case like the jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, the turbo actually makes up for the loss of torque and provides it when you need it. The engine is capable of delivering 210 lb-ft of torque at just 1750 rpm which is really good.
The lower trim levels are not that capable. They produce about 175 lb-ft of torque at 3900 rpm which is not what you want when you are offroading.
Now if you are looking to modify a used Renegade to be an offroader then you should definitely stay away from those that came before 2017.
Now, if you are looking to modify your Jeep Renegade, or as the Engineers of the Renegade say “Personalize your Renegade”, then you would have to work on the following personalizations.
Before we dive deep into modification, let’s address one very important aspect. Trailhawk edition is what we would recommend for offroading, but just so you know, the Cherokee Trailhawk is about $7000 more than the Renegade Trailhawk but you get so much more.

17-inch wheel comes standard in the Jeep Renegade, and some higher trim levels can have up to 19 inches, which looks great but they don’t give much clearance to the wheels during bumps and we don’t want that, they are more towards the luxury side.
Now the Trailhawk also comes with 17-inch wheels. You should opt for the off-road tires and you will be good to go. Make sure that you lift your Renegade up to the point where you want it to be, then select the tires that go with the setup.
When you are a beginner Outlander and you want to take your Jeep on an off-road adventure, you must lift your ride at least 3 inches.
Nowadays we are having the multilink suspension setup in the back. There are a lot of different suspension setups that you can put on your Jeep Renegade.
You don’t have to go with the most expensive one to have a better feel, you can simply go for the reasonably priced setup that is not too cheap and not too expensive.
With the off-road suspension, you will get a lot smoother rides compared to the stock suspension.
There are a lot of things you can put on your Renegade to protect it from the wilderness. If you have the Trailhawk, you will get a lot of this protection stuff as standard. And on top of that, you can add more.
Make sure you have the skit plate, rock sliders, limb risers, etc, so you can prevent your Renegade from taking damage.
When you are a beginner Outlander, chances are — you are gonna get stuck. To get your Renegade out of that hole, you need recovery points. Make sure to have those.
This is one of those additions that increase the utility level of your Jeep. With a roof rack, you will be able to carry a lot of stuff along with a spare tire.
If you want to travel during the night, then don’t forget to put on those extra lights so you won’t miss any obstacles on the road.
